28/04/2026•It’s incredible to see modern apartments built directly on top of 2,000-year-old Roman arches. It is one of the most unique "living" ruins in the city •This was the blueprint for the Colosseum but without the massive lines. You can walk right up to the base for free and see the detail up close, or just stay street level and get some great pictures! •It’s a quick, easy visit right next to the Jewish Ghetto and the Portico of Octavia. Perfect for a fast photo op while walking through the center!

11/04/2026A historic open-air theatre built 🏛️🏛️🏛️ in 13 BC by Emperor Augustus who dedicated it to his nephew Marcellus. It reputedly accomodated up to 20,000 people. It’s a magnificent architecture with impressive Doric base and a Corinthian upper level. It was converted into a Palazzo in the 16th century. Today, parts of if have been transformed into private residences and business offices.

23/02/2026From street level the Theatre of Marcellus looks like a compact Colosseum with apartments parked on its roof. The lower rings are Augustan: stacked Doric and Ionic arcades in travertine, once wrapping a semicircle of seating for tens of thousands facing a marble stage. Julius Caesar began clearing this strip between the river and the Capitoline; Augustus finished it and named it for his nephew Marcellus, turning the old performance ground into his own stone theatre. When shows faded, the shell became a fortress and later the Savelli-Orsini palazzo, so today Renaissance windows sit directly on Roman vaults. In summer, chamber concerts return music to the ruin while the archaeological paths below trace its outline beside the former Ghetto.

11/02/2026Teatro di Marcello – Personal Review (American English) Teatro di Marcello is one of Rome’s most fascinating monuments because it shows how the city continuously builds upon its own history. Often compared to a smaller version of the Colosseum, this ancient theater was completed in 13 BC and dedicated to Marcellus, the nephew of Emperor Augustus. What makes it unique is not only its age but its evolution. The lower levels still display the original Roman arches, solid and elegant, showcasing early imperial engineering. Above them, you can see Renaissance-era additions, including residential structures that were built directly on top of the ancient ruins. This layering of architecture perfectly captures the spirit of Rome—nothing is erased; everything is adapted. The setting is beautiful and less crowded than many of the city’s major landmarks. Located near the Jewish Ghetto and the Tiber River, the area has a calm, authentic atmosphere. 03/06/2026Es una obra que recuerda al Coliseo aunque fue construido antes que él. No tiene las multitudes que tiene el Coliseo y está hasta mejor conservado. Por otra parte tiene otra edificación mucho más reciente arriba, que le quita unidad arquitectónica, pero se entiende al leerlo o cuando a uno se lo explican. Está además al lado de la calle, y muy cercano al Getto Ebraico de Roma, al Pórtico d’Ottavia, el puente de Fabrizio sobre el Tíber, y la isla Tiberina. Ideal para visitar todos los lugares en la misma caminata. También está próximo al Templo de Hércules y a la Iglesia de Santa María en Cosmedin (Boca de la Verdad).

Zgrajen je bil v poznem 1. stoletju pr. n. št., dokončal pa ga je cesar Avgust, ki ga je poimenoval po svojem nečaku Marku Marcelu. Gledališče je bilo namenjeno uprizoritvam dram, komedij in javnim predstavam, podobno kot grški teatri, vendar prilagojeno rimskemu urbanemu okolju. Sprejelo je približno 15.000 do 20.000 gledalcev, kar priča o velikem pomenu javne zabave v antičnem Rimu. Arhitekturno je Teatro di Marcello pomemben zaradi svoje večnadstropne fasade, ki je služila kot vzor poznejšemu razvoju rimskega gradbeništva, zlasti uporabi lokov in kombinaciji različnih arhitekturnih redov (dorijskega, jonskega in korintskega). Ta sistem je kasneje močno vplival tudi na arhitekturo Koloseja. V srednjem veku je doživel zanimivo preobrazbo: del gledališča je bil vključen v utrdbo in kasneje spremenjen v stanovanjsko palačo, kar je razlog, da je danes zgornji del zgradbe še vedno naseljen. Ta “življenjska kontinuiteta” je eden redkih primerov, kjer antična struktura še vedno služi bivalnim namenom. Danes je Teatro di Marcello pomembna turistična znamenitost in arhitekturni spomenik, ki se nahaja v bližini Kapitolskega griča in judovske četrti. 14/05/2026Teatr Marcelussa to - oryginalna budowla która powstała niemal 100 lat przed słynnym Koloseum i stała się wzorem architektonicznym dla wszystkich późniejszych rzymskich teatrów. Historia: Na pomysł budowy spektakularnego obiektu wpadł Juliusz Cezar. Kazał wznieść okazały gmach, który przewyższy swoją wspaniałością kompleks ufundowany przez jego rywala Pompejusza. Nie dożył jednak ukończenia budowy, którą kontynuował pierwszy rzymski cesarz Oktawian August. On doprowadził budowę do końca. Ukończony teatr nazwano imieniem jego zmarłego przedwcześnie (w wieku zaledwie 19 lat) siostrzeńca i dziedzica Marcellusa. Oficjalna inauguracja teatru nastąpiła pomiędzy 13 a 11 rokiem p.n.e., choć pierwsze przedstawienia sceniczne zorganizowano na nim już w 17 roku p.n.e. Jego plan różnił się jednak od teatrów greckich. Przede wszystkim w architekturze rzymskiej teatry były samodzielnymi budowlami, a w świecie greckim drążono je w naturalnych zboczach. Oba typy budowli współdzieliły półokrągłą widownię zwaną cavea, scenę oraz stojący za nią budynek sceniczny. Główną różnicę stanowiła orchestra, jak nazywano przestrzeń pomiędzy sceną a widownią. W przypadku Teatru Marcellusa oraz innych rzymskich teatrów miała ona półkolisty kształt i mieściła przenośne krzesła, zarezerwowane dla przedstawicieli warstw wyższych. W teatrach greckich orchestra miała kształt okręgu i przeznaczona była dla chóru, a nie widzów. Widownia Teatru Marcellusa skierowana została w stronę Tybru i mogła pomieścić nawet 20 500 widzów. Wykonana wyłącznie z trawertynu fasada widowni składała się z trzech poziomów. Po upadku cesarstwa zachodniego i nastaniu chrześcijaństwa Teatr Marcellusa podzielił los innych monumentalnych pogańskich budowli - przez kolejne wieki traktowano go jak kamieniołom i rozbierano kawałek po kawałku. W XI lub XII wieku pozostałości widowni trafiły w ręce rodu Pierleone, który włączył starożytną strukturę w obręb swojej warownej twierdzy rozciągającej się od Tybru aż po Kapitol. W 1368 roku prawo do tego terenu przejął ród Savelli. Niecałe 150 lat później podjęli oni decyzję o zastąpieniu średniowiecznych zabudowań renesansowym pałacem. Do realizacji tego niełatwego zadania zatrudniono Baldassara Peruzzi’ego, ucznia Donato Bramantego, który jakiś czas wcześniej wzniósł wspaniałą Villę Farnesina. Architekt w zgrabny sposób wbudował zachowaną fasadę rzymskiego teatru w nową rezydencję. W XVIII wieku pałac stał się własnością rodu Orsinich, którzy wprowadzili do niego pewne zmiany, choć głównie wewnątrz rezydencji. Obecnie Teatr Marcellusa (bez możliwości wejścia do samego pałacu) oraz Świątynia Apollina są częścią niewielkiego i dostępnego bez biletów stanowiska archeologicznego. Warto przespacerować do końca wydzielonego terenu i dojść do monumentalnej bramy będącej w przeszłości wejściem do starożytnego Portyku Oktawii, a która obecnie jest częścią kościoła Sant'Angelo in Pescheria.

Najciekawsze jest to, że ten budynek dalej „żyje”, na górze normalnie są mieszkania, więc to nie tylko zabytek, ale część miasta. Warto podejść i zobaczyć z bliska, bo ma fajny klimat i daje inne spojrzenie na starożytny Rzym, bardziej na luzie, bez tłumów.

Miejsce pod ten obiekt zostało wyznaczone już przez Juliusza Cezara, jego zabójstwo w 44 p.n.e. spowodowało jednak przerwanie prac. Wznowił je Oktawian August, dedykując budowlę swojemu przedwcześnie zmarłemu w 23 p.n.e. siostrzeńcowi Markowi Klaudiuszowi Marcellusowi. W 17 p.n.e. teatr był areną uroczystości związanych z ludi saeculares, oficjalne zakończenie budowy miało jednak miejsce dopiero w 13-11 p.n.e. Wolnostojąca kamienna konstrukcja mogła pomieścić szacunkowo około 13 tysięcy widzów. Fasada widowni składała się z trzech kondygnacji z rzędami arkad w porządkach (kolejno): toskańskim, jońskim i korynckim. Teatr został zniszczony pod koniec starożytności. W XII wieku pozostałości budowli włączono w obręb wzniesionej w tym miejscu twierdzy, będącej kolejno własnością rodów Fabii, Pierleoni, a następnie Savelli. Do czasów współczesnych z teatru zachował się jedynie dwukondygnacyjny fragment ściany widowni, wkomponowany w gmach Pałacu Savellich wzniesionego w latach 1523-1527 według projektu Baldassare Peruzziego. Od średniowiecza pomiędzy starożytnymi arkadami znajdowały się stragany okolicznych handlarzy. Zlikwidowano je w latach 20. XX wieku, podczas przeprowadzania kompleksowych prac restauratorskich połączonych z obniżeniem gruntu.

20/03/2026Teatro di Marcello to imponująca budowla z czasów starożytnego Rzymu, zbudowana za panowania Oktawian Augusta i nazwana na cześć jego siostrzeńca, Marcusa Claudiusa Marcellusa To jeden z najstarszych kamiennych teatrów w Rzymie, który mógł pomieścić nawet około 20 000 widzów. Często porównuje się go do Koloseum — i nie bez powodu, bo jego półkolista fasada była inspiracją dla późniejszych budowli. Dziś nie jest to już czynny teatr, lecz dobrze zachowane ruiny, które można podziwiać z zewnątrz. Co ciekawe, w średniowieczu konstrukcja została przekształcona w fortecę, a później w pałac — dlatego górne kondygnacje wyglądają zupełnie inaczej niż antyczna część. Miejsce jest mniej zatłoczone niż Koloseum, a równie nasycone historią. Idealne dla osób, które chcą poczuć starożytny Rzym bez tłumów i w bardziej autentycznej atmosferze.

11/03/2026Si crees que ya lo has visto todo en Roma tras visitar el Coliseo, el Teatro de Marcelo te hará cambiar de opinión. Es, en mi opinión, una de las estructuras más curiosas y fotogénicas de la ciudad por una razón principal: es un "edificio sándwich" que resume 2,000 años de historia en una sola fachada. ¿Por qué vale la pena visitarlo? Lo que ves es un teatro romano del siglo I a.C. (terminado por Augusto) que, con el paso de los siglos, se transformó en una fortaleza medieval y, finalmente, en un palacio renacentista con apartamentos de lujo que todavía están habitados hoy en día. ¡Es increíble ver ventanas modernas y macetas con flores encima de arcos romanos clásicos! Puntos destacados para tu visita: • Arquitectura: Fíjate en los órdenes de las columnas; los niveles inferiores son dóricos y los superiores jónicos, un estilo que luego inspiró directamente el diseño del Coliseo. • El entorno: Está justo al lado del Pórtico de Octavia y a la entrada del Ghetto Judío, lo que lo convierte en un punto de partida perfecto para una ruta histórica a pie. • Ambiente: A diferencia del Coliseo, aquí no hay hordas de turistas con palos de selfie. Es un lugar mucho más tranquilo donde puedes apreciar los detalles de las piedras y los restos de templos cercanos (como las tres columnas del Templo de Apolo Sosiano) sin prisas.

Nato come teatro in età augustea, è stato trasformato nel tempo in fortezza e poi in palazzo nobiliare, integrando l’antico nel tessuto abitato. L’imponente struttura in travertino, ancora leggibile nei suoi ordini sovrapposti, dialoga in modo diretto con il Tevere e con il contesto circostante. Un luogo in cui archeologia, architettura e vita urbana si sovrappongono in modo naturale e convincente.

La parte esterna è sicuramente ristrutturata ed è adiacente il Ghetto ebraico. Si stanno eseguendo lavori di scavi archeologici e alcuni cartelli descrivono la zona.

17/02/2026El Teatro de Marcelo nos da a conocer la importancia del teatro en la Roma clásica. Este edificio construido en el siglo I antes de cristo por el primer emperador Augusto, pero ya empezado por Julio Cesar, es una de las primeras obras imperiales. En ella se ven parecidos con el Anfiteatro Flavio, ya que algo se inspirarán los arquitectos de Vespasioano para su construcción. Se puede acceder hasta las 6 de la tarde a sus alrededores pero tras esto se cierra, aún así a su interior no se puede acceder actualmente, por tratarse de una propiedad privada, ya que en lo alto se ven apartamento. Frente a este nos encontramos los restos del templo de Apolo, más adelante el pórtico de Octavia, hermana de Augusto, entrando ya en el quartiere ebraico de la ciudad, uno de los más antiguos del mundo.
