The Synopsis
The place in brief
“Trattoria Da Enzo al 29 is a highly renowned institution in Trastevere, famous for its high-quality traditional Roman cuisine. Although many customers praise dishes like carbonara and the carciofo alla giudia, the experience is often affected by long wait times and an extremely crowded environment. Visitor opinion is mixed, ranging from those who consider it an unforgettable experience to those who believe it is an overexposed and overpriced establishment.”

emgcat2026-06-14We waited over an hour. Worth every minute. Pasta. Lamb ribs. Meatballs. Artichoke. We tried it all and loved it!
Simon O2026-06-14So glad I came for dinner. Its definitely best to line up before 6.30pm as it does get busy. They'll offer you drinks while in line also which you can go inside to order and pay and still keep your spot in line. Has the classic Roman trattoria feel. Carbonara and tiramusu were amazing. A cool vibe and beats the tourist traps in the historic centre.
Mason C2026-05-25Amazing meal!! Make sure you plan to get there early or be ready to enjoy a few drinks in line because it’s an extremely popular place! The wait is 100% worth it and the owner is there greeting tables to make the experience even better!
Ioana M2026-05-24This managed to maintain the authentic Roma experience despite the crowds. The food is excellent: the Burata special was the best we ever had, and the oxtail was incredible. The staff were very friendly but worked like a well-oiled machine. The deserts are also very worthy of being mentioned, specially the wild strawberries!
LuxeHiker2026-05-11Meh. Better Cacio e Pepe all over Trastevere and Rome.
Michelle Sand2026-05-09We had their fried artichoke as part of a food tour. It was SOOO good! Hope to come back for a seated full meal some day. The line was very very long, but our local food tour guide said that it was worth it to try a full meal there too.
Karen b2026-05-07We were here many years ago. Not the same. Long lineups, average food, many restaurants in Rome can serve the same. And where are the locals. All tourists in line.
Gemma2026-04-24We arrived shortly before afternoon service was due to finish. The tables inside and out were all full as it was a gorgeous April afternoon, the waiters said they would be able to seat us before the kitchen closed at 3pm. We waited approx 10 mins. Staff were attentive and friendly as soon as we sat down. Tables are cosy but this all adds to the atmosphere. Locals and tourists chatting away but not on a really busy street so not too much noise from traffic and passers by. We were told the specials and were recommended a nice crisp white wine, served perfectly chilled. We shared the burrata and tomatoes and fried artichoke, both were amazing! Simple but beautiful flavours. We then moved on to have Gricia (me) and meatballs (him). The pasta was the best I had in Rome, possibly the best I have had ever! The guanciale was cooked to perfection and there was so much cheesy, peppery goodness in the sauce! Boyfriend isn’t a massive fan of meatballs at home but he said these were on another level, so flavourful and tender. The best meal we had in Rome by far and would definitely visit again for the location, service, atmosphere, food and wine. Grazie!
H…2026-04-20Extremely long queue for what feels inauthentic. No Italians in here only really Americans and English. We were really disappointed with the food and it was on the expensive side. Staff were friendly enough but we wouldn’t recommend this place as we didn’t love our food and the wait was very long (1.5 hours)
Sarah D2026-04-19The food was good but the absurdly long wait was not worth it. We had no idea that it was a Goop/G. Paltrow "hot spot" recommended eats, or else we would have avoided. Very touristy. In addition, we had a bag stolen from us while eating outside; it happened when a sudden rain shower came on and the staff started pulling down the plastic sides (staff were the only people near our table when it happened). The manager was responsive but kept insisting it didn't happen at his restaurant.
Lindsey Procter2026-04-10Luckily, we got there 5 minutes after opening, it was already nearly full, but we got the last table for 2. I read this was the place to come, and they weren't wrong. Incredible food and service. I can see why people queue. There was a fairly large queue as we left, so I would highly recommend either getting there for opening, or being prepared to wait - which is worth it!
Nicole H2026-04-09This was hands down the best food we had in Rome. The wait was worth it. Yes, it was crowded a little chaotic and hectic but the first bite of the meatballs were like heaven in my mouth.
Mctravel332026-04-02This was a place on Tik tok that was highly recommended. We waited an hour and a half to get in while freezing cold out which wasn’t too bad as you could order drinks in the queue so we didn’t mind waiting if the food is good. I think this restaurant is a little overhyped, the food is nice but it’s not nicer than some other quieter places we’ve eaten. The meatballs were nice, the pasta was satisfying and the chips were very fresh but overall I would not be waiting in a queue for so long when there’s better food elsewhere.
Karmen2026-04-01We waited for about half an hour in a queue. They are well organised. Tables in front are cramped, you’re likely to sit with strangers. Menu is simple and dishes are decent - but I have tasted better ones in less known and not overhyped places so I wouldn’t come back here. The stuff is very kind though.
Elif D2026-03-22We waited for like an hour and it was really bad, we ate zucchine flower patties which smells like a dirty oil and cacio e pepe is regular.
rox f2026-03-20We visited Da Enzo al 29 based on many recommendations, but unfortunately our experience was disappointing. We had to wait a long time in line, which raised our expectations, but the food did not match it. The portions were quite small and the prices were high for what you get. The food itself was just average and not something special compared to other local restaurants in Rome. The place felt overcrowded and rushed, and even the restroom was not clean, which was surprising for such a well-known restaurant. Overall, we felt this place is overrated. There are definitely better options nearby with better value, larger portions, and a more pleasant experience. I would not recommend it.
Daniel R J Walter2026-03-20Had to wait about 1hr for a table, but the pasta was worth it! :)
mikaella p2026-03-09Honestly I do not have any idea why somebody would go there twice, nor why they would recommend it to someone else. The line was very long, but that wasn’t the problem, there were tables clearly empty and ready for people to sit but for some reason they wouldn’t offer the table after it was made available even though the people were already waiting for over 1 hour. We had to ask for a table three times even though there were tables ready and available. The food was also medium to bad, I really did not enjoy any of the food. The table next to us were also clearly dissatisfied as well, that should have been our hint.
Max B2026-03-01People call this a tourist trap. I say trust the process. Make sure you queue up before 6:30 if you want to get a table early; otherwise, be prepared to wait 60-90 minutes for a table. The good news is that while you wait, you can buy a spritz and chat with the folks you're with. The carbonara was to die for and the oxtail ragu was also excellent. Food here is high-quality. Are there places that are maybe comparable where you don't need to wait? It's possible. But this is a consistently good spot that is worth the wait for the experience alone.
Will2026-02-19Good food, kinda overrated and a little overpriced but the neighborhood is lovely. Only worth going if the line is short or non existent. On my momma.
- EEli2026-02-12
I visited Al Enzo yesterday and unfortunately the experience did not live up to the high online rating. There was a huge line outside, which set high expectations, but the reality was quite disappointing. The tables were extremely cramped and unstable, making it uncomfortable to sit and enjoy the meal. We had to ask three times before we were finally given wine glasses. The staff seemed more focused on clearing our plates immediately and rushing us out to seat the next people in line, rather than allowing us to enjoy a relaxed dinner. Overall, we did not feel welcome or able to enjoy our evening properly, which is the whole point of dining out. If you’re in the area, I would instead recommend Papa Re — good prices, tasty food, and a much more pleasant atmosphere.
Amber R2026-01-31Was so excited to try this restaurant due to the reviews I had seen online. As an English couple it was almost impossible to make an order as majority of staff are non English speaking. Our biggest disappoint was the food after queuing for an hour. It was average at best, small portions and bland tasting food. Would not return. The best part was the €3 wine. The toilet was atrocious.
al m2026-01-19The queue was unreasonable and deserving to be laughed at, but its human nature were all sheep thinking it must be worth the wait. What a disappointment this was the food was supper salty, to the extent we left it. Definitely a tourist trap the worst pasta we had to eat in Rome, Not worth the wait or the price.
Sándor N2025-12-22That was a real foodtrip back to Rome historian kitchen. The waiter was kind and helpful. We were lucky because we arrived around 12.15pm and so that there was few freetable. After few minutes there was a waiting row so if you are coming here be ready to wait for the table. The tiramisu was one of the best I’ve ever (m)e(e)at and the carbonara as well.
David G2025-12-09Just came back from lunch. Wonderful experience! The waitress gave me excellent suggestions. I eat slowly, sitting alone at a table with a line of people waiting for a table. No problem! No pressure at all from the waiters while I enjoyed my lunch. The food was good but the service was even better! HIGHLY recommend!
Joanna K2025-11-26The only good thing we ate here was artichoke alla romana. Pasta carbonara so hyped up was horrible. So salty I could not eat it at all. My husband ordered pasta alla Grecia and it was also super salty as the same salty pancetta was used in both dishes. Not edible. We also had cod croquettes and they were tasteless. Will not be going back or recommending to others.
- LLaura2025-11-14
We rolled in at 14:30 (fashionably late by Italian lunch standards) and lucked out—no queue! We were seated immediately in this gloriously simple, no-frills trattoria that buzzes with authentic Roman energy. Don’t let the tourist chatter fool you: this spot is packed with locals too, and the efficient, well-oiled staff keeps everything running like clockwork even at peak chaos. You’re here for the pasta, full stop. The classics are executed to perfection: • Silky Carbonara • Punchy Amatriciana • Creamy Cacio e Pepe But the star? The Gricia—pure, guanciale-driven bliss. Save room for the Tiramisù; it’s cloud-like and downright addictive. Service is lightning-fast yet genuinely warm. If you only eat pasta once in Rome, make it here.
mamatosixmd2025-11-11This restaurant was recommended to us by the guide. We waited in line to get in. The service was awful, the food passable. They forgot our bread, one of the bottles of water, and the cheese for the pasta and then charged us for the water. It took 15 minutes to get our bill paid.
Christopher C2025-11-08We came to this restaurant based on a friend's strong recommendation. We had to wait about 30 minutes in line for lunch (around 1p on a Tuesday). The food was tasty, but not out-of-this-world-good. We had the deep-fried artichoke (perhaps a bit over-fried), the battered zucchini blossoms, meatballs and carbonara (very salty). The service is brisk. While we enjoyed our meal overall, I don't know that I need to return.
Danielle K2025-11-06A traditional osteria where every dish tells the story of Rome. Creamy cacio e pepe, unforgettable amatriciana, and great house wine. Authentic atmosphere and warm staff. Book in advance it's always full but absolutely worth it.
Jon S2025-11-03Emperors new clothes - don’t be fooled the wait, the atmosphere, THE FOOD. Left more than a lot to be desired - would not recommend.
Michele Z2025-10-29This restaurant was recommended to us and we were told it is so popular that people wait in long lines to get in. We waited and finally got a table. We were quite disappointed. Perhaps they don’t have enough wait staff. Two of the items we ordered didn’t arrive. When they brought our main course, they walked away without bringing us shredded cheese. We wouldn’t have known how bad our experience was except the table next to us had amazing service including a spoon for the shredded cheese to sprinkle it out. We gave up, ate our main course, and asked for our bill. It came after five minutes with one of the items we had ordered but hadn’t received. We got the revised bill another five minutes later. After 15 more minutes of waiting to pay, my husband went to the man who appeared to be in charge and paid it with him. I think it’s a tourist trap.
Judith N2025-10-27Tiny Trastevere trattoria serving honest Roman classics. The carbonara is silky, the fried artichoke perfectly crisp, and staff keep the line moving with a smile. Worth the wait.
Jet409129425892025-10-25After 5 years of saving I had the opportunity to finally book a trip to Italy to come eat at this legendary restaurant. The best Aperol spritz while waiting in line, such lovely staff who helped me through the menu. The artichoke looked incredible. Their fior di zucca was also impeccably done. All the chefs I have worked for have told me to come to this restaurant. Unfortunately they could not serve me due to my peanut allergy, and I am appreciative for their honesty. This is and will be a bucket list restauraunt. It will always be the best restauraunt I never got to eat. (I've been told for years it's the best carbonara in rome) Grazie a tutti. Maybe one day...
Maria C2025-10-19After waiting on a line for 45 minute which I didn’t mind because we were told how amazing this place was. Huge disappointment! Small menu, what I was told was a special & what I ordered was a mistake & wasn’t on the menu. We had the meatballs which were ok. A Salad , brought my entree (pasta)while I was still eating appetizers, was no place to put the dish , expected me to rearrange the table so he could put it down. Service & food, so not worth the wait
RXSORT2025-10-01Best food in Italy — and that’s saying something. Trattoria Da Enzo al 29 serves up authentic Roman cuisine in a casual, no-frills setting that’s all about flavor and tradition. The line is long, but it moves fast and is absolutely worth the wait. Just make sure you show up hungry — the portions are generous and the dishes are hard to resist. I went with my business partner, and she was so impressed he went back the very next day. That says it all. The atmosphere is lively, the staff are efficient, and the food is unforgettable.
Rebecca2025-09-30Heard a lot of good reviews online about the restaurant and started to queue 1 hour before the restaurant opened in the evening. Staff came to take drink orders whilst in the queue which we enjoyed! There were 8 people in front of us and we managed to get into the restaurant as soon as it opened. However, for an outdoor seat we were told we would be waiting another hour!! The pasta sauce for both mine and my partners meals were very salty and I’ve had better elsewhere. However, I did enjoy the homemade pasta itself and the atmosphere of the restaurant. I would have been more disappointed if we were starving whilst waiting in the queue. I feel that it would be unlikely I would return again as the pasta sauce was not to our taste
Jim Poyser2025-09-29Massive queue to get in which is odd because East Trastevere is generally pretty sleeping compared to the main drags west of the Viale Travestere. Must be some "online sensation". And to be fair the secondo I had was over salty but pretty tasty - Oxtail - but it wasn't any better than anything else I had in Trastevere living there for a month plus the wine list wasn't amazing I didn't think - unless you want to break the bank. If I hadn't had to queue for an hour I would have thought yeah ok this is a nice little place, but don’t believe the hype would be my advice!
isart_xx2025-09-27Delicious, fresh burrata. And loved the fried potato balls. Service was great and the food was fresh and delicious. Came here as part of a food tour. Recommend!
Anne B2025-09-25Lovely food - we had pasta pepe with a great vibe .It’s the place to be in Trastevere . Expect to queue at least an hour however enjoy aperols in the queue . For the hype and price we did expect a wow meal, however it was nice but not wow ! but still worthwhile.
Fairing2025-09-17Our experience was incredible. We had read reviews and headed out - the location isn’t obvious but worth going there We had to queue for an hour for a table but it was well worth the wait They serve you drinks whilst waiting too Not a large menu but they take pride in providing a quality meal over huge choice. Highly recommend the burrata, carbonara and tiramisu They concentrate on good ingredients and wonderful food
EmiR20032025-09-16We got in line an hour before they opened. There were already 6 ppl in front of us. We ordered drinks and happily chatted with others in line while we waited. We has to wait an extra 30 minutes because we wanted to sit outside. In total we waited an hour and a half to be seated. The wait staff was super fast and accomodating. The burrata was fantastic. The fried artichokes were also fantastic. The cacio e Pepe was good but not my favorite. The flavor was nice and the pasta was cooked perfectly, however it wasn’t hot, just very warm. We also had the carbonara. That was delicious. No notes. The scaloppine was also very good.
John M2025-09-14Had a great evening here. Had to wait a while but were served drinks and looked after. Dinner made the wait completely worthwhile. Excellent food, we had the carbonara, meatballs, stuffed zucchini flowers and tiramisu for dessert, all excellent. Efficient friendly service. Highly recommend.
Holly R2025-08-29Excellent meal. The best we had in Rome. Very friendly staff. The best bread! And the best tiramisu. Order the meat balls. We waited an hour in line to eat. But had the best experience.
Keir J2025-08-10Da Enzo Al 29 – Carbonara Perfection Hands down the best carbonara I’ve ever had — and it all comes down to the guanciale. Crispy, rich, and deeply flavorful, it infused every bite of the silky, perfectly emulsified sauce. The pasta was cooked to that ideal Roman al dente, and each forkful was a masterclass in simplicity done flawlessly. Cozy, bustling atmosphere and warm service sealed the deal. Worth every minute of the wait.
Taylor B2025-07-27This could be Louis' restaurant in Brooklyn, an Italian trattoria straight out of the epic 1972 movie Godfather. Da Enzo Al 29 doesn't serve the best veal in the city but it offers the most authentic Roman cuisine prepared with love, passion and respect for tradition. The wine is stacked along the walls, the tables are draped with checkered tablecloths and the daily specials are scribbled on a chalkboard. Located at Via dei Vascellari 29, tucked on a cobblestone street in Trastevere by the Tiber River, it is regarded as one of the leading restaurants in Rome. Open from 12:30 to 3 and 7:30 to 11 Monday through Saturday, Da Enzo Al 29 is Italian from Milan to Naples. My wife and I started with sourdough bread and ricotta served with local honeys and jams, then deep fried with zucchini and flowers packed with mozzarella and anchovies. Then grilled garlicky eggplant, fried artichokes and Cacio e Pepe and polpette or meatballs, a mix of beef, mortadella, ham and pecorino cheese served in a thick tomato sauce. For her entree, my half-Italian wife indulged in all'amatriciana cooked to al dente, full of pasta and chewy chunks of cured pork cheek and dusted with pecorino romano with creamy rigatoni topped with succulent bacon and peeled tomatoes. I chose another classic Roman dish, Trippa alla Romana, made by stewing tripe in a tart tomato sauce with finely chopped fresh herbs of fennel with garlic and onions, then topped with grated parmigiano reggiano. For dessert, we shared portions of tiramisu and pistachio gelato.
Dr. Benton Quest2025-07-19This wound up being the first restaurant we ate at during our recent extended trip to Italy. I must say, although food in Italy is the best in the world, eating here first set the bar incredibly high. Roman food is just fabulous and from the meatballs to the amatricana, everything was perfect. Located in an alley in Trastevere, you will want to be early as there will always be a line. This is a small place, outdoor seating, and great service. This is a true gem, not to be missed.
theholeman2025-07-14Pros: Amazing food ( children loved it which is a hard task)/ friendly staff Cons: 45 minute wait ( function of the food I think) Charged us €41 for two plates of children’s spaghetti and meatballs which is frankly just nuts! Very expensive place given we went to Anthony Andrea’s place the night before which was half the price and better food.
robert p2025-07-08Not the spot we were lead to believe. Poor service, and the food was not even close to good. I honestly thought there must be another restaurant by the same name that gets all the positive reviews because this place can not be it. No line to get in though.
Valentina C2026-03-21Personale eccellente e super simpatici, ottimo cibo.

Valentina M2026-02-19Ottima pasta, servizio veloce e gentile. Complimenti
Observação importante: o espaço físico é bem rústico e o banheiro deixa a desejar.

Posto piccolo. Prezzi molto oltre la media. 55€ per tre primi. Cibi iper speziati. Spenna turisti.
ivandona2025-12-12Siamo stati oggi a pranzo in tre persone.
c-mt2025-11-29Proprio come ricordavo!
Buon rapporto qualità/prezzo Servizio veloce nonostante l’affollamenti.
Amei a agilidade no atendimento.
Bernhard G2025-11-03Einfach gesagt: Touristen Abzocke!
Galizia L2025-10-04Ho mangiato veramente bene. Prezzo in linea.
