Rome’s oldest café, founded in 1760, Antico Caffè Greco is less a coffee stop than a living museum of the Grand Tour. Goethe, Liszt, Keats, and Stendhal once sat here, and the red velvet benches, gilt frames, and statuary still carry that salon-like atmosphere. The macchiato and cheesecake I ordered were serviceable (6/10 and 5/10), but the price goes beyond what’s on the plate: it’s the cost of continuity. Greco faces huge rent pressures from its landlord and uncertain protection for its heritage. To sit here is to make a small contribution to a place that has outlasted empires, where conversation and culture have lingered for centuries.

9 years ago the cafe was wonderful. Everything went great, the atmosphere was excellent, the service was top notch and the products were excellent. The setting was beautiful and plentiful. Now in 2025 a huge disappointment. The service was not customer friendly, rather very ordinary. The pistachio cake was dry and the setting, so ordinary too. No cookies or chocolate or cold water in a glass or a small jug to accompany the tea even though it was a very warm day. The tea itself was very good but if you want more hot water you have to pay for it even though a pot of tea costs 18 euros. The cake was 14 euros. A really greedy and so overpriced cafe. All the old paintings had been moved away for a while but I understand that because the walls have been renovated. The atmosphere was very ordinary, boring I would say. Then there is almost in the middle of the second room an odd kitchen area that makes the whole cafe look like a canteen. I will never go back here again. On the other side of the piazza there is a much better cafe/teahouse to drink your tea or coffee.

A must try on your Roman holiday! Caffe Greco seems to get a lot of mixed review. Having experienced it myself I can say it’s a caffe in its own league. It’s equal parts caffe and museum, not to mention a respectful nod to a time long passed. Being one of the oldest caffes in Europe, people among the ranks of Lord Byron have traversed the threshold and dined within these walls. And for me that is part of what going here is all about. You’re buying entry to be transported back in time and sit in the same spots as some of history’s great minds. I think it’s worth noting coffee culture in Italy is very different from other countries, and especially the US. Usually being a walk up bar where you slap down one Euro, get a shot of espresso in under a minute, drink quickly, and move on with your day. This is not that place. You sit down, get served crème in a silver dish by a waiter in a tuxedo, and order fabulous tortes to indulge in the coffee experience. But keep in mind, by and large, Italians do not drown their food in sugar like so many people, and especially Americans, are used to. I think this is why some people find the experience to be lacking. I’ve always found the food here to be exceptional, but you need to be mentally and maybe emotionally prepared to drop some cash for coffee and cake. This is on the more luxe side of experiences. If that is your thing, then this is a must try on your Roman holiday.

Antico Caffè Greco offers a charming atmosphere steeped in history, complemented by exceptional coffee and a setting that reflects the elegance of Rome. Most of the staff were gracious and welcoming, embodying the spirit of Italian hospitality. However, the experience was unfortunately marred by the unprofessional behavior of one female staff member, whose conduct did not align with the otherwise refined and hospitable nature of the establishment. It is unfortunate that the actions of a single individual can detract from an otherwise memorable visit to such an iconic café.

Disappointing Experience – Overpriced and Overrated Sadly, Café Greco has become a tourist trap. The charm it once had has been replaced by outrageous prices and an underwhelming experience. We paid €81 for one cappuccino, one espresso, one sandwich, water, and one very mediocre omelette that alone cost €25 — as you can see for yourself. Do yourself a favor: stop by if you must, but don’t sit down. There are far better places in Rome where you’ll find both quality and authenticity without the shock of the bill.

We went to this cafe hoping to have a good cake and coffee served by experienced personnel and instead found ourselves disappointed by very poor service and unsavoury cake. We ordered a lemon cake that was supposed to be very good according to the waitress’ suggestion. Instead the taste of the cake was abysmal. We got served some kind of jelly looking cake that tasted nothing like lemon. The cream was solid and had multiple colour in it. Something that it is not really common in this specific type of cake. It looked somewhat not really fresh. Of course we did not eat it and expressed our disappointment to the waitress but our complain was unheard and met with unpleasantry which definitely should not belong to this kind of places. In the end we were charged 14 euros for a cake that we did not eat. Would never go back there again.

The cream coffee at Caffè Greco was a true highlight — rich, smooth, and worth trying. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience didn’t live up to the café’s historic charm. The fruits were not fresh, the desserts were overly sweet, and the staff lacked hospitality, making the visit feel rushed and cold. Despite its reputation, the overall experience was underwhelming. 2 stars for the coffee — but not much else.

Great coffee, but poor customer service. The cashier was extremely rude. She seems upset from beginning to end. She acted like she didn’t want to answer questions or didn’t want to interact. Super overpriced place and horrible staff and service. I walked in and wanted to check the interior and menu to decide if I want to dine in and I was told I am not allowed to walk around and was pushed to seat down. After checking the menu and realising how overpriced and unpleasant this place is, I wanted to leave and was threatened that I need to pay an entrance Fee!! And that they will call a police, absolutely shocking and unacceptable experience. If there is an entrance fee it should be announced and clear BEFORE ppl walk in as well as it is crazy that staff threatening you they will call a police just because you didn’t end up wanting to order anything and wanted to leave. We visited Caffè Greco near Piazza di Spagna and were really disappointed. The hot chocolate was basically just melted chocolate, extremely thick and hard to drink. I couldn’t even finish one spoon. It was honestly unpleasant. We also ordered a small sandwich that cost around €20, and the espresso was €12. The hot chocolate alone was €15. In total, we had just 2-3 items and ended up paying around €80, which felt completely unjustified for the quality and quantity we got. The place may be historic, but it’s extremely overpriced, and the experience didn’t live up to the hype at all.

This cafe takes you back in time and makes you marvel at the structures that were built 100s of years ago. I went with my friends for breakfast and though not fancy the dishes were decent. The service, however, left a lot to be desired. For example we asked for butter multiple times to use with the brioche we had ordered but it was given to us when all the food was gone. Even though they had enough staff milling around it was difficult to get one to take our orders. I’d still recommend this please though.

El Refugio de los Genios y el Tiempo Entrar al Antico Caffè Greco no es solo ir por un espresso, es sentarse en un capítulo vivo de la historia de Roma. Como fotógrafo de autor, me pierdo en la penumbra de sus salas, donde los espejos gastados y los cuadros originales crean una atmósfera de otra época que busco capturar para mi proyecto. A quien me lee: este es un lugar para la pausa lenta. Hay que saber apreciar el silencio entre sus paredes de terciopelo rojo, lejos del bullicio turístico, para captar la verdadera esencia de la ciudad eterna. Como autor, me fascina el ritmo clásico de sus mozos y la luz que parece detenida en el siglo XVIII. Un escenario de texturas históricas y elegancia absoluta que es pieza clave en mi documentación visual de Roma. Una experiencia sensorial donde cada rincón es un encuadre perfecto.

스페인 계단 보러 갔다가 외관이 예뻐서 들어갔는데 내부는 더 아름다웠어요! 카푸치노랑 크로아상 샌드위치 먹었는데 맛있었습니다. 나중에 찾아보니 유명한 곳이었네요 ㅎㅎ 금액을 안 보고 시켜서 몰랐는데 나중에 보니 금액대가 꽤 있는 곳이었네요 ㅎ 암튼 이탈리아 카페하면 생각나는 전형적인 고풍스러은 분위기였고 직원분들도 친절했습니다 :)

Caffetteria storica di Roma, ricca di opere che fanno di questo luogo un piccolo museo. Come tanti altri posti, però, è una caffetteria adatta al turista abituato e disposto a spendere €36 per una colazione al tavolo. Nello specifico: i due dolci che abbiamo provato, strudel e lemon pie, erano buoni; fetta generosa in particolare della lemon pie; abbiamo accompagnato solo con acqua; il servizio è stato di qualità, attento e preciso. È dunque una caffetteria che per la storia, lo stile e il servizio vuol mantenere una certa classe e si fa pagare. Per i miei gusti, per una colazione non ripeterei l’esperienza.

Venerdì 10 luglio In pomeriggio sono entrata in questo caffè di cui conservavo un buon ricordo(parlo di diversi anni fa) Ma purtroppo non è stato cosi questa volta .Ho ordinato una delizia al limone Che è risultata disgustosa per la crema Che appariva gelatinosa sia nell'aspetto che nel gusto Appena un. Un cucchiaino per assaggio,e non ho proseguito perché disgustata. La cosa che più mi è dispiaciuta è il modo con cui la signorina che serviva al tavolo Giustificava che "nessuno si era mai lamentato " E inoltre cosa ancora più spiacevole "che non cambiano portata in quanto molte persone ne mangiano metà e poi si lamentano per non pagare " La torta era lì, non consumata se non per cucchiaino di assaggio Mi dispiace oltre che per la delizia al limone (non certamente come quelle della costiera o di Napoli)il modo arrogante e poco consono ad un locale così antico Auspico oltre in un miglioramento nella composizione di tale torta al limone (ma certamente non delizia al limone) anche un comportamento più adatto da parte del servizio .non discuto il prezzo,ma entrando in un locale così antico e amato dai poeti inglesi si dovrebbe avere un servizio adeguato

Beware tourists, this is a real scam. After paying 12 euros for 2 espressos and 2 marocchinos they refused to give us 4 full glasses of tap water and demanded extra payment. This is not usually how caffees welcome their customers, it's yradition for water to be free at bars and cafes and nobody would ever refure to give out a glass of water. Vergogna Caffè Greco, non solo avete prezzi alti e qualità mediocre, ma siete dei veri mprti di fame e dei gran cafoni in termini di ospitalità. Che tristezza vedere un locale storico essere gestito in questa maniera scaltra e poco attenta alla tradizione. L'acqua è gratis a Roma. Vi auguro una vita assetata, m***e!

Il Caffè Greco in Piazza di Spagna è un posto molto speciale. È uno dei caffè più antichi di Roma, con un’atmosfera elegante e piena di storia. I tavolini, i quadri e l’arredamento fanno sentire come in un’altra epoca. Il caffè è buono e servito con cura. Il personale è gentile e il servizio è attento. È il luogo perfetto per fare una pausa tranquilla nel centro della città. Anche se i prezzi sono alti, l’esperienza vale la pena. Para hacer la gracia una vez en la vida esta bien pero repetir de nuevo no. El café expresso estaba bien pero yo había pedido capuchino, cannoli bueno y el corneto de jamón y queso pues normalito. Viviendo 8 años en Paris tampoco iba a tirar voladores ya que es un croissant de toda la vida pero en Francia están mejores.

Mi sono regalata un momento speciale al Caffè Greco – sì, proprio quello storico in via dei Condotti! Ho preso un caffè al banco e per un attimo mi sono sentita dentro un romanzo😍 Il locale è pura magia: elegante, antico, pieno di storie. Il caffè? Fortissimo, profumatissimo, da bere in un sorso come una vera romana. Un piccolo lusso che ti fa sentire parte della città. Per festeggiare qualcosa – o anche niente – è il posto giusto. Pedimos tres cafés con hielo y un cortado, nos traen cuatro vasos con hielo, devolvemos uno puesto que una de nosotras no quería hielo, y en lugar de 7€ nos cobran 12€. Llamamos a la encargada que duda de que le estemos diciendo la verdad, incluso volcó un vaso para ver si lo habíamos usado el peor servicio en un sitio tan caro que he visto en mi vida.

Lavorando nel turismo, passo spesso da luoghi storici, ma il Caffè Greco riesce sempre a colpirmi. È uno di quei posti dove ci si può fermare per un caffè e respirare davvero l’atmosfera di Roma. Trovo qualcosa di speciale ogni volta che occupo uno dei suoi tavolini un po’ vissuti, circondata da quadri e specchi che raccontano storie. Il servizio è attento, il caffè buono, e ogni volta è una piccola pausa che sa di bellezza. Appena varcata la soglia, ci si immerge in un mondo d’altri tempi. Le sale decorate con quadri, specchi antichi e arredi d’epoca trasportano in un passato glorioso, quando qui si incontravano artisti, scrittori e intellettuali del calibro di Goethe, Stendhal, Keats, Wagner e tanti altri. Il servizio è impeccabile: il personale è cortese, attento e professionale, capace di mantenere il giusto equilibrio tra tradizione e accoglienza moderna. Bar con cornetti e dolci squisiti e colazioni meravigliose, menù da pranzo eccellenti, posto incantevole per aperitivi. Il personale è sempre cortese e gentile. Un posto consigliato dove prendere un caffè sia al volo e sia stando comodamente seduti.

Ma compagne et moi, ainsi que mes parents souhaitons nous désaltérer à l’intérieur car mini terrasse bondé de monde qui prennent un café à 2 euros pour se montrer… Coutume mondiale reconnu mais au combien ridicule… Passons cela, nous n’avons pas pu nous installer à l’intérieur car accès au chien interdit… sincèrement de nos jours c’est honteux.. tout établissement de renom sait que nos amis les animaux se doivent d’être reçus et traités de manières exemplaires.. petite précisions ; nous avons un mini-cocker spaniel d’une douceur et gentillesse que ce serveur qui a répondu à mon père n’aura sans doute jamais. Je précise, que nous sommes des personnes qui laissons de très bon pourboire et qui ne consommons pas de l’eau en carafe du robinet… Bien à vous. From Geneva. 🇨🇭

Tramezzini freschi, atmosfera un po’ datata I tramezzini sono davvero molto buoni e freschissimi, un vero piacere per il palato. Il locale offre numerosi tavoli comodi lungo via dei Condotti, anche se le poltrone di velluto rosso, più adatte a un salotto d’epoca che a uno spazio all’aperto, risultano un po’ fuori luogo e avrebbero bisogno di un bel restyling.
